Introduction to Tutoring Options

An option is either:

a) Any statement a tutor or tutee makes which has a particular intent or

b) Doing nothing so the other will do something.

Knowing the different types of way to initiate a response will give you linguistic flexibility. Linguistic flexibility means that you have a ‘toolbox’ of alternate ways of quickly expressing your ideas based on what the tutee says.

Tutors and Teachers who can adapt their listening and talk behaviors to the specifics of a tutoring situation are more likely to succeed.

There are 6 techniques that you can draw on: initiate, reply, evaluate, explain, active listening and quiet.
