Reply

A reply is a response to an initiation. The two most important considerations in replying effectively are:

a) To focus on underlying strategies (We discussed these in tutor cycles, steps 4 & 8.)

b) To avoid explaining too much.

Thorough explanations make the tutee more dependent on you. Remember that you want to promote independence.

Take the following situation:

You have a new tutee and they approach you for the first time. What would be the best way to reply?


Tutee: How are you?

Are you having trouble with the quadratic formula?
I’m fine, thanks.
I see that you are working with the quadratic formula.
