.: Individual Roles :.
Maya Thomas – The staff development and
instructional consultant for the Middle City school district.
Ruth Ann Ponten – 7th grade pre-algebra
instructor to at-risk, low-level students.
- Feels that regular curriculum doesn’t work for this kind
of learner
- Hates to teach at the board and let students practice yet does
this all the time in all of her classes
- Believes that low-achieving kids can benefit from doing hands-on
activities in authentic situations
- Worries about class conduct – The pre-algebra kids tend
to be rowdy and off-task and often skip class
- Doesn’t like the current book used for these kids because
it is too choppy – ideas are covered in strange orders and
for the wrong amount of time.
Assistant Principal for curriculum
- Supports Ruth Ann in whatever steps she takes
- Would like to see a more progressive approach to math but stressed
that the state standards must be met.
- Wants to have a written pre-test, midterm, and post-test
- Knows that there is little money to support the purchase of
materials for the students
- Wants synergy with other in-school programs
7th grade pre-algebra at-risk, low-level students.
- Their role is that of the learner.
