Maya Thomas – The staff development and instructional consultant for the Middle City school district.

Ruth Ann Ponten – 7th grade pre-algebra instructor to at-risk, low-level students.

  • Feels that regular curriculum doesn’t work for this kind of learner
  • Hates to teach at the board and let students practice yet does this all the time in all of her classes
  • Believes that low-achieving kids can benefit from doing hands-on activities in authentic situations
  • Worries about class conduct – The pre-algebra kids tend to be rowdy and off-task and often skip class
  • Doesn’t like the current book used for these kids because it is too choppy – ideas are covered in strange orders and for the wrong amount of time.

Assistant Principal for curriculum

  • Would like to see a more progressive approach to math but stressed that the state standards must be met.
